This butterfly looked like a black wedge at the base of one of our oak trees. Didn't know this Morning Cloak butterfly prefers the sap of the oak trees and forages upside down along the way. When she opened her wings--stunning!

Painted Lady butterfly on Purple Prairie Aster

The last blast of color of the purple aster in the tall prairie grass at Rock Creek was all a flutter with Painted Lady butterflies. These look similar to the American Lady butterfly but the main difference is the Painted Lady has four eye circles on the bottom portion of their wings while the American lady only has two.
